Eddie Money

Eddie Money is an American rock and roll singer who had his debut and high point of popularity in the 1970s; however, he still enjoyed a career through the eighties, nineties, and in the present day. He was well known for his catchy rock and roll lyrics which were great over the radio, though he himself was not the greatest singer. Although he fell into the rock and roll lifestyle of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, he pulled himself out again in order to continue his music career. He was also known for his narrative style music videos on MTV.

Eddie Money was born in 1949. He initially intended to be a police officer like his father, but in the early seventies, he fell in love with music instead and began performing instead of following in his father’s footsteps. He began performing in nightclubs around the Bay Area in California. Fortunately, he was discovered by Bill Graham, a legendary promoter, and his career as a rock and roll singer took off. Through the late seventies, he became famous for his singing which was perfect for playing over the radio. He also jumped right on the MTV bandwagon and created many humorous narrative videos for his music which also made him very popular. However, like so many rockers of the seventies and eighties, Money fell into a lifestyle of drug use in the early eighties which made him fall in popularity and for a time, he slid out of the public eye.

Unlike many rockers, Money managed to pull himself out his drug haze and went back to singing. In the mid eighties he made a smashing comeback with the album Can’t Hold Back with songs that quickly reached the top of the charts. However, into the early nineties, he lost his audience again and slowly dwindled away. He would reappear on ‘Oldies’ tours, still singing his classics.

Although he had a shorter famous career than other singers, Money is notable for a few things. He wasn’t the best singer, but he made the absolute best of what he had and took chances on things like the new MTV and the movie video industry which was just starting to take off. He also used his voice best on the radio rather than concerning himself with live tours all of the time. He also managed to pull himself out his drug haze instead of continuing to fall into it like so many rockers of his age did. Money therefore has several things to show new rockers of the age: take advantage of any new media and technology, even if it is risky, use your talents to the best and you can always pick yourself up after you fall.
